As the fall academic term approaches, many students are deciding not to return to colleges and universities across the United States. Why? Students are distrustful of an institution's ability to lower risks of COVID-19 infection to keep them, their classmates, and the institution's staff safe.
Recently, Forbes reported that 20% of Harvard's first-year class has deferred due to COVID-19 concerns. The numbers are much more bleak for minority students, according to an InsideHighered article:
- 41% of minority high school seniors say it's likely they won't go to college at all in the fall, compared to 24% of white high school students
- 24% of minority students say they haven't decided which college to attend, compared to 14% of white high school students
This lack of overall trust and safety—not to mention the loss of millions of dollars due to lack of enrollment—could be turned around entirely with an evidence-based COVID-19 testing approach. An evidence-based testing approach can foster much-needed confidence while contributing to public safety among students and staff alike as well as their respective communities.
